Hydrogen fuel cell drone power means the drone makes its own electricity on board from hydrogen. Unconventional Energy designs and makes this power: air-cooled PEM fuel cell stacks from 500 W to 4.8 kW, complete power systems from 1 kW upwards, and the support to fit them into your UAV. We make the fuel cell, not the drone.
Three short steps, about one minute. We reply the same working day.

A fuel cell lets a large drone refuel in minutes, keep working in the cold and carry its energy as hydrogen instead of heavy batteries. A PEM fuel cell turns hydrogen and air into electricity, heat and water. There is no combustion, and the only moving part is a fan. For the full picture, see how our air-cooled fuel cell stacks work.
The energy is stored as hydrogen, not in the battery. How long a drone can fly depends on the platform, the payload and the size of the tank, so we size each system for the mission.
Refuelling takes about two minutes instead of hours of charging. The drone is back in the air quickly, without a row of spare batteries.
At system level, our fuel cell systems keep full performance down to −20 °C. Values for a specific product come from our engineers.
Our fuel cells run quietly, and the only emission is water. They use about 1/1000 of the critical raw materials of a lithium battery.
A fuel cell pays off on large drones with long missions. On small drones and short flights, a battery is usually the simpler choice, and we will tell you so.
A fuel cell wins on refuelling time, cold weather and long missions. A battery wins on simplicity and short flights.
| Hydrogen fuel cell | Lithium battery | |
|---|---|---|
| Refill time | About 2 minutes | Hours of charging |
| Mission length | Set by the hydrogen on board. Sized per platform | Set by battery weight |
| Cold weather | Full performance down to −20 °C (system level) | Range usually drops in the cold |
| Critical raw materials | About 1/1000 of a lithium battery | Baseline |
| Noise | Quiet, only a fan moves | Quiet |
| Emissions in use | Only water | None |
| What you need on site | A hydrogen supply | A charger and electricity |
| System | Fuel cell, hydrogen tank and a buffer battery or supercapacitor | Simple and widely available |
| Best for | Long missions, cold, fast turnaround | Short flights near a charger |
General comparison. Flight time and weight depend on the drone, so we give figures per platform.
We supply fuel cell stacks and complete power systems to drone makers and integrators, and we help fit them into the drone. We do not build drones of our own, so we do not compete with our customers.
Open-cathode stacks that need only a hydrogen feed and a fan.
Complete power units for drones that need long runtime and fast refuelling.
We fit the fuel cell into your drone and help carry it through the approvals it needs.
Over 96 % of our product content is European, with no critical components from outside the EU.
Our technology comes from Pragma Industries, the French fuel cell pioneer founded in 2004 in the French Basque Country. In 2026 its technology, patents and team became part of the Forking Future consortium. The work continues in Bayonne, France, as Unconventional Energy SAS. More about us.
Unconventional Energy is one of them. We design and make hydrogen fuel cell power systems for large industrial drones, built on our own air-cooled PEM fuel cell stacks of 500 W to 4.8 kW. Stack design and production are in France, and over 96 % of our product content is European.
Unconventional Energy makes hydrogen fuel cell power systems for both: large industrial drones (UAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). We supply the power system to the vehicle maker and help fit it. We do not make drones or vehicles of our own.
For long missions and fast turnaround, a hydrogen fuel cell. It refuels in about two minutes instead of hours of charging, and the flight time depends on the hydrogen tank rather than on battery capacity. For small drones and short flights near a charger, a battery is usually the better choice.
No. We make the hydrogen fuel cell power system and help fit it into your drone. Our customers are drone makers and integrators.
Large industrial multirotor and VTOL drones that fly long missions. For small drones and short flights near a charger, a battery is usually the better choice.
About two minutes, compared with hours of charging a battery.
Yes. At system level, our fuel cell systems keep full performance down to −20 °C. Our engineers give the values for each product.
It depends on your drone, the payload and the size of the hydrogen tank. Tell us about your platform and mission, and our engineers will size the system.
Yes. Along with the fuel cell, we can deliver local hydrogen production and storage, sized for your application.
About 98 % of the system mass is reusable. Our fuel cells also use about 1/1000 of the critical raw materials of a lithium battery. For the end-of-life handling of a specific system, ask our engineers.
